Welcome to the PredictWise Daily 20180624. My goal is to write Sundays through Thursdays, publish around 9 PM ET. It will be a short recap of what was most interesting that day. I will limit it to three bullet points. Today:
1) Republicans Hate the Rule of Law, but love order: President Trump issued an official statement that he wants to deport undocumented immigrants without “Judges or Court Cases”. This is a very serious statement from the President, insofar as itself is damaging to the trust and commitment to our judicial rule of law. But, it also leads very quickly to making an argument for not providing legal rights to legal immigrants, and then onward classes of citizens that the state does not like (naturalized citizens, Muslims, etc). So, do not let anyone talk to you about Republicans being the party of law and order, they are the party of order. Democrats are the policy of law and order. Earlier PredictWise article: Republicans Hate the Constitution.
2) Republicans Will Take Aim at Legal Immigrants Next: While President Trump uses his executive power to reek havoc on undocumented immigrants, his legislative fight is very focused on stemming legal immigration, and so is the next stage of executive action. He wants to basically close our borders (well, at least cut legal immigration by half). He wants to make it so hard to come to the United States, the best and brightest scientists, the most ambitious young families, the people who have made the United States such a dominant force in the world will stop topping off our talent pool. He wants to make life so miserable for LEGAL immigrants already here, that they leave too. This will be costly to our economy, including native-born Americans, and our security. In contrast, Democrats want comprehensive immigration reform that ensures the right flow of immigrants, both skilled and unskilled, to keep the United States as the dominant economy in the world, and safe/secure (not to mention, moral leader). Earlier PredictWise article: Completely Closed Borders: Republicans costly policy position.
3) Democratic Healthcare Plan (let anyone buy Medicare, if they want) is a sharp contrast with the Republican Healthcare Plan (make healthcare unaffordable for people with preexisting conditions and sabotage market for everyone else). This remains the top public policy issue of the upcoming 2018 election. Earlier PredictWise article: Messaging Healthcare.
